Tourists who visit the Maldives have developed a soft spot for these sea turtles. Who wouldn’t? When you see them hatch they are just so tiny as they find their way to the water. Green turtle, Hawksbill turtle, Olive Ridley turtle, Loggerhead Turtle, Leatherback are the general species found in the Maldives. The green and the hawksbill turtle are common in the Maldives and is known to nest throughout its beaches. The leatherback is rarely seen in the Maldives and does not have a record of nesting in the Maldives.

Marine turtle population is declining throughout the Indian Ocean.

Persistent human abuse, especially catching or killing of nesting females and collecting their eggs is mainly the reason for the depletion of its numbers in the wild. The Maldives government has pronounced several protected areas, this will prohibit anyone to catch or kill sea turtles.
